I have to admit that I’m not a huge Oreos fan, but this recipe for homemade Oreos at Smitten Kitchen looked too good to not try. They were incredible – the way a cookie sandwich should taste. I used Strauss butter and Dagoba cocoa to make this treat a little more upscale (not that I’m particularly upscale, but if you’re going to spend time baking and frosting cookies, you might as well use the best ingredients you can find). I had to make the cookies a second, and then a third time just to make sure the first try wasn’t a fluke. Then I invited a few friends over to make a couple of batches. The cookies are even better when shared with a group of friends, and eaten with a glass of milk and a bowl of ice cream.
On another food note, the New York Times has this recipe for individual, deep-fried, fruit pies with bourbon. These pies may possibly be the perfect dessert after a fried chicken, mac n cheese dinner. I’ll see if I can find some cling peaches at the farmers’ market this weekend. Thankfully, I already have some bourbon. Hmm… maybe I’ll pick up some mint, as well. It is mint julep season, after all.
